Alun Cairns tells business leaders – UK Government will support you

Alun Cairns will today meet Welsh business leaders to assure them the UK Government stands ready to help as the country prepares to leave the EU.

The Secretary of State will be setting out the Government’s plans for the creation of a specialist EU unit to tackle complex issues like trade treaties and legal agreements when he meets representatives from leading Welsh businesses, as well as CBI Wales and the Institute of Directors. He will assure them that the UK Government will build on the strong economic foundations it has put in place and aim to keep our vibrant economy on track.

Mr Cairns will also be meeting the Welsh Local Government Association and executives from higher education.

Mr Cairns said:

We are in the early days of a momentous move for the UK. I am in Wales to reassure business and council leaders that we are determined to address their concerns and make the new settlement work.

The Welsh economy is now a thriving and dynamic one, with more people than ever in work and many coming from overseas to our high performing universities. My priority is to ensure we maintain this success and manage our transition to the new arrangements in a calm and measured way.

Today’s meetings are the first of a series of events I will be holding across Wales. While we remain EU members for now, I am starting work straight away to ensure we get the best deal for Wales.

Mike Plaut, Chair of CBI Wales, said:

Over the coming months business and government in Wales must work more closely together than ever before to secure the best outcome for Wales in these negotiations, preserving the openness of the Welsh economy.

This means seeking to protect tariff and barrier-free access to the Single Market, ensuring companies are able to continue to attract the best people to the UK with the skills we need, while recognising public concerns about immigration.
